Where do you work? What do they provide and what is your role?

We have both owned and operated The Mighty Kiwi Juice Bar & Eatery in Selkirk for 3 years now. We serve healthy food and drinks in our shop and we carry a variety of retail items from various local makers.

How did you end up working where you do now?

We met working at a local gym in Selkirk, we both wanted to create a place that offers healthy food, and that helps highlight other local businesses.

Where do you volunteer?

We have helped with various organizations like Holiday Alley, BPW Selkirk, & Ducks Unlimited Canada. Through our shop, The Mighty Kiwi we also try our best to donate prizes or even food to various community events.

How did you find yourself as a volunteering there?

We found these organizations through various people we have met in our community through our business.

What does your volunteering provide?

Holiday Alley is this amazing street festival in the winter with free admission including various crafts, music, games and more! In return, the funds we raise at the event, including the tickets from the chili cook off we participate in is donated back to the community. Through our role in the BPW (Business and

Professional Women of Selkirk & District), we volunteer our time to meet with other business professionals in the community to organize events to help highlight female owned business and female business professionals in our community. With the Ducks Unlimited, we are a part of our local chapter and we help organize on a dinner and games night to raise money and awareness for wetland conservation.

What does a community mean to you?

A community to us is a group of people who offer support, friendship, advice throughout all phases of life. It is people who want to come together to help each other through tough times like a pandemic or to celebrate the good times like Holiday Alley! It’s wanting to succeed with your community!

What community are you apart of ?

Selkirk itself for sure and then the business community and we definitely feel a large sense of community just within our own shop!

Who else is involved in your community?

We have so many amazing people involved in our community including our great friends, family, customers and many other fellow business owners who have been such a great support to us these past few years.

How does everyone work together within your community?

Selkirk has many generous people willing to help in various different ways. One way we have noticed is the amount of extra support everyone has been giving to each other and us throughout this pandemic.

What are the challenges your community faces?

One of the challenges we have faced lately would obviously be the current pandemic. Our community also unfortunately has a large amount of people struggling with various drug and alcohol addictions and the pandemic has definitely exacerbated the problem.

What do you think is the impact of your community? What do they offer to others or those involved?

Our community offers a safe, comfortable home environment with all of the resources plus a bit more. Anyone passing through is welcomed and many refer to this as their second home! This community shows what it really means to care for one another.

What is something you would like to create in your community or group?

We would like to continue to do our best to create a safe, sober, inclusive space for everyone and to do what we can to stay involved and help where we can.

What is your biggest reason for being a part of your community?

We love being a part of this community because there are so many great people we have met here. We like to use our role to raise awareness for various causes we are passionate about and we want to do what we can to give back to the community!

What has been the best outcome of your community? do you have a success story you'd like to share?

The best outcome personally has been the amount of support we have received since the beginning. We have come a long way since we started and this community has supported us the whole way through. Even throughout this pandemic we have had to make various changes to our shop and people have just still been so supportive and kind to us.

How has your involvement or work in the community changed you? How are your a different person now because of it?

Our involvement in the community has definitely changed us for the better because we have met so many great people and have learnt so much. We have also developed a deeper level of compassion for others and have been exposed to so many different perspectives and challenges of those living in our own community.

What are some of the lessons you have learned?

To be kind to each other, to always be there for each other and to relax a little bit!

Why do you want to share your community? What do you feel its is important to let others know?

I want to share our community because theres always room for more people to be apart of it and it’s not like anywhere else! Theres great places for people to meet, to be involved in an organization and become a part of the bigger picture. We have many great community driven events and it is just so nice to see everyone always coming together!

What is one thing you really want others to know about your community or group?

Others should know they are welcome to join in, stay awhile and make their own waves – there is a whole community of us to support them!
